Jan Marvin's cosmic works show control of light and movement. In "Candlelight," a young woman rests, bathed in a candle's red-orange light. The flame's barely visible tip sits in the bottom right corner casting meditative warmth throughout the picture. A thin tendril of hair flies away as the girl leans toward the flame exposing a tiny gold hoop earring. The image is all soft lines and blurry edges with any imperfections hidden by the candle's soft glow.

Movement is the key in "Spinning," another of Marvin's works. Here a blond-haired girl with outstretched arms twirls about in a yellow t-shirt. Her hair flies to the left as she finds exhilaration in her spinning. Marvin superimposes a carnival ride's swirling white lights over the girl, accelerating her pace. The groups of lights are shaky and wavy creating tension between horizontal and circular motion. This tension evokes the ephemeral qualities in both a meditative moment and the ecstasy of release, helping to define each picture's movement.
